How do I kill it all and start over?

I bought a house that was vacant for almost 2 years and the yard must have 50 different type of plans growing in it and most of them don’t look like grass.

What is the best thing to use to kill it all and start over?

How long do I have to wait before I plant new grass?

How do I avoid killing my shrubs?

There are better ways than roundup!
If you ave the time, you can lay a thick covering of mulch. It'll smother out everthing you don't want & you just go around your shrubs. It'll fertilize your soil & you'll be amazed at how healthy your soil w/ be. Since winter is coming & you don't say where you live, I'll presume that you're in a cold area & none of your neighbors lawns w/ be in Home & Gardens either. So, have a mulch lawn for the winter. Then in the late spring, (when you know that everything you want to get rid of has had time to spend all its energy trying to push thru the mulch) rototill it all in & plant your new grass.
The added organic matter provided by the mulch w/ help hold the moisture that the new grass needs.
Or you can use black plastic to solorize the soil. It'll bake the weeds. It'll also bake everything else in your soil, but it's much faster than mulch, if you have to do it quickly. If you have compost, you can solarize w/ the black plastic & then put the compost in to replentish your microbe herd.

If you insist on spraying, use vinegar. I buy mine at the store & load it into the sprayer. It's a non-selective herbacide, just like round up. Difference is that it's much cheaper & it actually works better. Remember vinegar is the common name for Acetic acid! It distupts the photosynthisis & kills the plant. You might have to spray more than once, but you would w/ round up as well.

Will sprinkling cayenne pepper all over my garden box ruin the plants?

There are a lot of stray cats in my neighborhood and I am afraid they're all going to use my new garden box as a litter box. I heard that sprinkling cayenne pepper all over the box will repel the cats, but won't it also make the vegetables taste bad? Is there anything else I can buy/do to keep them out?
