Do I have to use a medium in my oil paintings?

I recently bought a set of canvases and oil paints, but I have no oils to use as my medium. People tell me I should mix the two together, but I don't understand why.

Would the painting look bad or dry improperly if I used oil paint straight from the tube?

Thanks for your help!! :D

The simple answer is: No, you don't have to use any medium with oil paints.

Medium will dilute the paint so it's not so thick, and it can add different qualities to the paint -- like help it dry faster, or look more transparent -- but it's not necessary.

Go ahead and paint. If the paint is too thick, you'll want to use medium. However, you might be fine without it.

what should i paint with acrylics on a canvas?

so i recently got a plain white canvas and a set of acrylics in tubes (Winsor & Newton) but im stuck on what to actually paint. I'm pretty good at drawing, so I'm alright at painting (im no expert) so what should i paint, any suggestions? i would like to do a landscape without people, (but if your suggestion does have people they must be silhouettes ) ok please help, thanks in advance! :D

Some artists find a pure white canvas daunting; I'm guessing that might the case here? You may find it helpful to tone the canvas a neutral color. One way to mix a neutral is take some ultramarine blue and an umber, mix together and add some white, then coat the entire canvas.

As far as what to paint, that's entirely up to you. Do you have some favorite sketches or some favorite landscape scene? Maybe these could be the basis of your new painting. You might also view this new canvas as an experiment, and just sample the paint and see what it does.

Another idea: I found this assignment helpful in art school. We were assigned to mark the canvas into a grid; on each square we were to mix all the colors, two colors at a time (i.e. blue with yellow, then blue with red) and then with white. In essence creating a color chart. It took the pressure off for 'what to paint' and was very helpful as a great color mixing reference for later on, when painting on new canvases.
